Project Description

Putnam County YMCA: A New Hub for Health and Community

The Putnam County YMCA construction project stands as a major milestone for Putnam County. Led by Tonn and Blank Construction and designed by Elevatus, the 71,000 square foot facility was brought to life through a strong partnership between the City of Greencastle, the YMCA of the Wabash Valley, and Putnam County Hospital.

This long-awaited community project brings nearly 60,000 square feet of recreation and wellness space to the region. The center features three full gyms, a fitness center, group exercise rooms, a teen lounge, child watch area, and a large community room with a teaching kitchen. An 11,000 square foot medical office expands local access to prompt care, family medicine, physical therapy, and occupational health services.

Building Through Challenges

Construction came with real hurdles. Supply chain disruptions delayed key materials, and a wet spring slowed foundation work. Close coordination among all partners was essential to keep the project moving. Tonn and Blank’s self-perform capabilities and proactive planning allowed the team to stay in control of quality and schedule throughout these challenges.

Progress on Site

Over the course of construction, crews advanced structural steel, masonry, roofing, interior buildout, and site development. The Medical Office Building rose steadily alongside the recreational spaces, with framing, drywall, ceilings, casework, and flooring following in sequence. Exterior elements such as masonry veneer, metal panels, and curtainwall helped bring the final architectural vision to life.

A Facility Designed for the Future

The new wellness center serves the community today while preparing for future growth. Its flexible design accommodates planned expansions including a natatorium, fieldhouse, childcare center, and advanced career academy. The 14-acre site provides room for outdoor recreation, parking, and long-term development.

A Community Dream Realized

The Putnam YMCA construction project fulfilled a decades-long goal for Greencastle and Putnam County. The YMCA opened its doors in early 2025, offering a wide range of programs for children, families, adults, and seniors. From after-school care and youth sports to fitness classes and community education, the center supports more than 50,000 visits each year and is already becoming a vital gathering place for the region.

This project stands not only as a construction achievement but as a symbol of community collaboration, shared vision, and long-term commitment to health and well-being.
