Kicking Off YMCA Expansion with Wall-Breaking Ceremony
Tonn and Blank Construction joined the Crossroads YMCA team, community leaders, and project partners to mark a major milestone — the start of Phase 3 of the Schererville Family YMCA expansion. But this wasn’t your typical groundbreaking. With no dirt to flip, the team swapped shovels for sledgehammers, turning the event into an exciting “wall-breaking” ceremony that symbolized breaking down barriers and building new opportunities for families.
Held inside the former Jak’s Warehouse, the celebration unveiled renderings of the YMCA’s next chapter — an adaptive reuse project designed to promote health, wellness, and connection for all ages. The expanded facility will feature family and youth spaces, indoor turf fields, a bouldering wall, group fitness areas, nutrition classrooms, and a bright, welcoming design that encourages people to stay, play, and connect.
This project represents more than construction — it’s a shared mission. Supported by Franciscan Health and the White Family Foundation, and designed by Elevatus Architecture, the Schererville Family YMCA expansion builds on a longstanding partnership between Tonn and Blank Construction and the Crossroads YMCA. Together, we’re creating environments that inspire community connection, engagement, and wellness for the 25,000 members served across 11 YMCA locations — and supporting the creation of more than 1,400 jobs in the region.

We’re proud to help the YMCA “break down walls” — both literally and figuratively, to build a stronger, healthier future for Northwest Indiana families.
